Shocked?? Well, its a proven research and this is what it says,
“Dance embodies one of our most primal relationships to the universe. It is pre-verbal, beginning before words can be formed. It is innate in children before they possess command over language and is evoked when thoughts or emotions are too powerful for words to contain.”
Children move naturally. They move to achieve mobility, they move to express a thought or feeling, and they move because it is joyful and feels wonderful. When their movement becomes consciously structured and is performed with awareness for its own sake, it becomes dance.
How many of us have played a song and made a child, who is so innocently illiterate towards the meaning and lyrics of the song, dance to its rhythm, Let me be specific here, EVERYONE has made a kid move to the rhythm of music. How can that person then at a later stage become a non-dancer? Ever gave importance to that thought? Have you ever thought that the child dances well because her mom’s a dancer, or its in her genes??? EVERYONE has.
Have we instead thought about it this way, that as parents we did not give the child enough exposure to music and rhythm and allow the child to explore the natural movement of the body to the beats of music? Why?? For those skeptical parents, here is why you need to let your child listen to some rhythmic music.
“Dance is a natural method for learning and a basic form of cultural expression. Children learn movement patterns as readily as they learn language. Dance is a powerful ally for developing many of the attributes of a growing child. Dance helps children mature physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. The physical benefits of dance are widely accepted, but the emotional, social and cognitive attributes have only recently begun to be appreciated.”
Everyone understands how dance can be an excellent source of physical activity for children. Because it involves great deal of hand and foot movements to rhythm it does immense work on coordination. This also tends to improve the reflex action in kids, which is the time taken to react to certain situations. Children with problems in hand eye coordination have in fact undergone dance therapy to improve major and minor muscular movements and level of alertness. Dance unlike other activities utilizes their entire body, which turns out to be the best form of fitness a child can get at that age.
Now when we come to understand the emotional aspect of dance for kids, we wonder how it would benefit them. Children don’t really understand complex emotions how can kids mature on their EQ with dance then? Most importantly kids have an excessive never ending source of energy, and they are always looking out for an outlet for it. Those kids who don’t get an outlet turn out to become aggressive and troublesome at home. In a dance class kids get a channel to throw out all that excessive glucose in them and they feel exhilarated because they simultaneously develop a skill to showcase. Scientifically pent up emotions, is nothing but negative energy, hyperactive kids have a school bag full of energy, all this gets a healthy channel and they learn the art of converting negative feelings and excessive energy into something visually beautiful such as dance.
Cognitive aspect, as most of us understand is the actual IQ that we talk about, our brains capacity to decipher things. How can that improve by dance movements? Well, the idea lies in something as simple as giving a thought or an idea a physical or spatial presence by using your body movement. Give a dancer a thought and he’ll be able to give it a movement. This improves brain development in kids. Most dancers don’t have to take too much effort to study because they see everything as a rhythm or movement and can thus remember and recollect things very well.

On a personal note, I want to share my story with you guys. Today after successfully completing five years of teaching Zumba, I want to finally disclose the secret of my class popularity. I come from a background of Bharatnatyam from the age of four, and NO, that is NOT why people love me taking a Zumba Class, but that is where I have learnt a lot more than just movement, that is where i learnt EXPRESSION of movement.
